Teenager J.J. McCormick received national media attention last week when he pulled a one of a kind Babe Ruth baseball card from a pack and sold it for over $10,000.
The 2004 Playoff Prime Cuts trading card pack was purchased from Dan's Sports Cards in Jacksonville, FL and featured a piece of an authentic game-used jersey. However it wasn't just any jersey nor just any swatch of material. The jersey was a 1925-era pinstripe home jersey worn by the Babe himself, and the swatch was from the "G.H.Ruth" nametag stitched into the jersey.
The story first appeared locally, but has quickly made the rounds and was even featured on CNN. This news comes just days after another Donruss Playoff card, a 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia Jumbo swatch card of Jim Thorpe featuring the embroidered "Thorpe," sold for over $12,000.
"I was extremely excited when I opened the pack, I knew I had something special," said seventeen-year-old J.J. McCormick. "I was in Dan's this summer on one of my days off busting packs and my hand was shaking when I saw it, I knew I had a "one of one" right away."
The Ruth jersey caught the media's eye in 2003 when it was revealed that only three home pinstripe Babe Ruth jerseys were known to exist. Then in 2004, The Babe's daughter (Julia-Ruth Stevens) made a ceremonial first cut of the jersey at the ESPN Zone in Times Square. According to Leland's Auction House, this particular Babe Ruth jersey, with "G.H.Ruth" embroidered into the fabric, is the earliest known to exist. Donruss Playoff had incorporated pieces of the jersey into trading cards that were randomly inserted into packs.
