A recent lazy afternoon at the Donruss headquarters took an extreme turn when legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk dropped by to visit company employees and their kids. Hawk, a new addition to Donruss' popular cross-brand Fans of the Game insert, will be featured on standard trading cards and autographed cards in the November release of 2004 Leaf Rookies & Stars Football.
To commemorate his Fans of the Game participation, Donruss officials procured a skateboard directly from Hawk and created the first-ever competition-used skateboard card of the extreme sports pioneer.
"I didn't even know making cards [like that] was possible," said Hawk, a video-game icon whose career highlight, hands down, was appearing on The Simpsons. "It's really cool. I'm sure having the cards with pieces of the skateboard will have a great appeal for my fans. Having a card with a piece of used memorabilia on it is exciting, especially because mine is a non-traditional sport."
Hawk signed autographs for and fielded questions from Donruss employees and their children during his two-hour visit, which ended with Hawk receiving several parting gifts, foremost among them several hundred of his own memorabilia cards, which he plans to give away via his fan club.
